The twins may have been Lauren’s first surprise; Eddie, however, was the biggest. And Gramma Eddie didn’t have to worry about feeling, or looking old. She was, perhaps, one of the most breathtakingly beautiful women Lauren had ever seen.

She was also one of the most gracious.

“Well, look at you,” she greeted Lauren around a huge, polished smile when Lauren walked into the dining room. “Aren’t you just the prettiest thing?”

Pretty was not a word Lauren would have used to describe herself at this stage of the game. The last three months had taken their toll. She’d lost a good ten to twelve pounds, her complexion was sallow and, at the moment, she still had creases on her blouse and her cheek from her nap.

It wouldn’t have mattered, however, if she’d been at her best. Next to Eddie, Michelle Pfeiffer would look like dry toast.

The woman was stunning.

Eddie’s long hair, which reached midway down her back, was a riotous mass of springy black curls. Her figure, in ivory raw silk slacks and a jade silk blouse, was straight out of a fashion magazine. And her face—her face was a study in perfection, as flawless as the china spread out on the table.

“You must be famished,” Eddie clucked, her perfect, wing-shaped brows drawing together in concern. “Here, now. You just set yourself down and we’ll see what we can do about taking the growl out of that tummy.”

A soft, guiding hand settled on her arm and steered her to a chair, then squeezed in reassurance.

“Mark, honey, I could use a little help. March on out to the kitchen with me and put those broad shoulders of yours to work.” She winked playfully at Lauren who hadn’t been able to do anything but absorb in speechless silence.

“Gramma Eddie made soup,” Tonya piped up from her seat across the table as Mark obediently followed Eddie into the kitchen.

“Cream of something-good-for us,” added Sonya not looking all that enthusiastic. “But if we eat it all we get dessert. You too, Larn,” she added with an encouraging smile as she struggled around the pronunciation of Lauren’s name.

Lauren returned their bright smiles with one of her own and kept it frozen in place when Mark hipped open the swinging kitchen door, a large soup tureen clutched between his big hands.

“You drop it, darling,” Eddie warned, right behind him with a bowl of salad in one hand and a platter of delicate, crustless sandwiches in the other, “and the two of us will be having a serious discussion about your prowess as a real man.”

“If I were a real man,” he said with a grunt and a good-natured grin as he set the tureen in the middle of the table, “I wouldn’t be playing fetch-and-chase to a house full of women.”

Eddie only smiled, hugged an arm around his waist and squeezed. It was an action they both looked very comfortable with. “You love it and you know it.”

He returned her smile. Lauren smiled too, but it was forced
